The great warriors and heros of the past in different areas and walks of life have disappeared in physical terms but their souls and minds are still hovering and floating in our stories and memories. WHY LO'AU?

'HAU 'O MOMO, LO'AU Fena pe ka ko Nua'

WELCOME TO THE '
LEPA' OF MA'ANANGA

LoauRS WAS FOUNDED IN SYDNEY ON THE 16/1/99.

In ancient Tonga, Ma'ananga was said to be the residence of the Lo'au lineage situated at Ha'amea district. Ha'amea included most, if not all, areas between Vaini and Te'ekiu villages in central Tongatapu. Fualu at Pea village was the spot where Ma'ananga was located.

However, the first appearance of the title Lo'au (Taputoka) was associated with the 10th Tu'i Tonga, Momo, around the 10th century AD. He was regarded as a foreigner, but he had a daughter, Nua, whose mother was a chiefly woman from Ha'amea. Nua became the
ma'itaki, favourite wife, of Momo. Momo, on the advice of Taputoka, formed the royal kava ceremony, giving it both socio-political significance. The son of Momo and Nua was Tu'i Tātui, and he began a series of major reforms under the guidance of probably Lo'au Tongafisifonua. He was responsible for the expansion of Tongan imperialism to neighbouring islands such as Futuna, Fiji and Samoa and the construction of the Ha'amonga 'a Maui Motu'a Trilithon and Royal tombs (Langi).

Ma'ananga symbolized the wisdom of the Lo'au lineage with respects to instructions connected with human-physical activities such as
kava ceremony, stone constructions, navigation, land tenure system, annual calender and numerical complex system. Traditionally, the word ma'ananga pointed to the uniqueness of Lo'au's ability to predict upcoming events in the distant future, hence the ancient proverb Toka-'i-Ma'ananga (Wisdom of Ma'ananga). Traditions related that the Lo'au lineage, Ha'a Lo'au, conducted a school of navigation in a huge lepa (lake) at Fualu. In light of this skill in social reforms, Lo'au title was regarded as 'Tūfunga Fonua (Carpenter of Land-people)'. It is with the same intellectual depth that LRS, a platform for critical discussions and dissemination of objective knowledge, hopes to achieve...

Poingipongitapu 'o e Tama Tu'i ko Siaosi Tupou V

Please click to watch the video of which Princess Latufuipeka, the only daughter of the new King, HM Tupou VI, performs the Royal Kava Mixing, Milolua Fakamuifonua, of the Tu'i Kanokupolu Line..........

This is the Pongipongitapu, Sacred Morning, ritual in the Royal funeral (Hala) of HM King Siaosi Tupou V of the Kingdom of Tonga. It is an ancient Taumafa Kava, Royal Kava, Ceremony, to mark the death of HM Tupou V and the first kava cup for the next  King, HM King Tupou VI.  It is a part of the ancient ritual of the Tu'i Kanokupolu, Kanokupolu Kingly Line, and the ancient religion of the Tu'i Tonga Line, Scared Kingly Line, to mark the passing away of the fomer King and welcoming of the next King.  This should not be confused with the Taumafa Kava for installing and coronating King Tupou VI, which will be held sometime next year after a year from the death of His predecessor.

In ancient Tongan society, some of the Nimatapu of Lauaki from Ha'a Maliepo were buried alive with the Kings in the latter's graves, as a sign of great respect not to leave them there without bodyguards.  The last funeral in which four of the Nimatapu were buried alive was the death of Taufa'ahau King George Tupou I, the first Constitutional Monarch, of Tonga in 1893.  It was all for the sake of respect and also to ensure that Tupou I was safe in His grave during the transition of His spirit from this World (Maama) to the next World of Paradise, Afterlife (Pulotu).

This is the First Part of the Royal Funeral of HM King George Tupou V of the Kingdom of Tonga.  It is a historical and cultural event whereby the funeral rituals of the ancient religion under the guidance of Lauaki and his Sacred Hands (Kau Nimatapu) from Ha'a Maliepo (Maliepo Lineage) and Christianity are amalgmated.  Ha'a Maliepo is one of the two oldest Chiefly Lineages in the Kingdom - the other one is the Ha'a Talafale with the leadership of Noble Tu'i Pelehake.  Only Lauaki and the Kau Nimatapu are allowed by tradition to take care of HM and the Royal Members when are in state of rest prepraring to be buried and taken from Maama (Earth) to Pulotu (Afterlife or Paradise).

Nuama from Fonua and Maama

nuama globe

The title Nuama was derived from the Moanan-Tongan words 'fonua'/land/fulfillment and 'maama'/earth/light. Both words are weltanschauung, worldwide view to life or philosophy of life. Their are several implications of such words regarding the ways Moanan-Tongan people in ancient sociieties perceived the meanings and purposes of life generally. There are five different meanings of fonua in Tongan culture, and four connotations for maama, interrelating in a given social condition within the normal scheme of things in space (va), time (ta) and the categories ('uketo'iangama'u).

Logo & Motto of Nuama of Moana

"EVERYTHING EXISTS IN MAAMA AND FONUA AS A RESULT OF MAAMA AND FONUA."  Maama and fonua in the first part point to earth and land, and second part stands for light and fulfillment.
